Are you looking for a cute, patriotic dessert? Look no further than right here. These festive cupcakes have it all. A bit of pizazz, a bit of sparkle, and a whole lot of spirit!

The first thing we’re going to do is mix up a large bowl of vanilla cake batter. I cheated a bit and used King Arthur brand gluten-free vanilla cake mix. It is my favorite box cake mix because it tastes similar to a homemade recipe. If you use a box mix, prepare the batter according to the instructions on the box.  I also made a batch of chocolate cupcakes for the chocolate lovers.

After preparing the batter, we will separate it evenly into three bowls. Leave one bowl of batter white, then use red and blue food coloring to make red and blue batters. Fill the lined cupcake tray, stacking even amounts of each colored batter into the cups, then give them a quick swirl with a toothpick to make patriotic tie-dye.

Bake the cupcakes following the instructions. When ready, let them cool, then frost with classic white frosting. The frosting can be made from scratch or use a jar of premade! 

Once the cupcakes are cooled and iced, set them aside while we assemble the toppings.

Making Sugar Sprinkles

Our next step is to prepare colored sugar sprinkles to decorate the cupcakes and to make the firecracker. We are going to make a large batch of red sugar and a smaller of blue. We will use plain white sugar as well to make red, white, and blue. You can do this step ahead of time to save time!

Grab your sugar, food coloring, and a zip-lock bag to make this cute topping. Pour the desired amount of sugar into your zip-lock bag, then add a few drops of food coloring. The more food coloring you add, the deeper the color will be. Close the bag, sealing it tightly, and allowing some air to stay in the bag, then start to shake! Shake the bag and knead the sugar mix to distribute the food coloring. When your sugar is evenly colored, lay the bag on its side and flatten the sugar. Open the top of the bag and let it air dry for at least 20 minutes.

Once the sugar is dry, start preparing the marshmallows. This step was the messiest, and my fingers had a bit of red staining for the rest of the day, but they turned out so cute!

Start with a small bowl of water, a bag of red sugar sprinkles, a tray lined with tin foil, and a bag of jumbo marshmallows. Rub a small amount of water on the marshmallow and cover it with red sugar. Tap off the excess and line it up on the tray to dry. We now have the body of our firecracker.

Once the marshmallows are dry, we can assemble the cupcakes!
Sprinkle a small amount of red, white, and blue sugar on the icing, then press a marshmallow into the top. I positioned mine at a bit of an angle, but you can stand it straight up as well.

Slide the handle of a sparkler down through the marshmallow into the cupcake. Pushing it deep into the cupcake will help keep the marshmallow in place. If the sparkler is too long, you can trim the wire handle to a better length. Wire cutters make this process quick and easy. If you don’t have access to wire cutters, strong scissors will do the trick.

Once the sparklers are on, the cupcakes are complete. When you are ready to serve, light them up and watch them sparkle! I added an American flag pick to some of mine, but they also looked super cute without!

Warning:

The sparklers will be HOT when they burn out, leaving the inside of the marshmallow hot as well. Take precautions and give them a moment to cool down before eating.
